September @ the Studio

There’s a particular kind of shift that happens in September.

Summer has its own rhythm. Long days, open schedules, bare feet, late evenings, following the light and seeing where the day takes us.

And then September arrives.

The mornings are cooler. The calendars fill up. We begin gathering ourselves back in.

I find this transition can feel harder to navigate than we sometimes expect. Autumn asks us to pull our energy inward, away from the free flow of summer, and there can be a heaviness to it.

A weight.

But maybe that weight is needed.

Maybe it slows us down enough to get off the summer train. To stop carrying the momentum of one season into the next and give ourselves a chance to switch gears.

To land.

Last month I wrote about places to return to—spaces where making can become part of the rhythm of our lives rather than something we keep meaning to get back to.

Here are a few ways to do just that at the studio this fall.

Monthly Sound Baths with Megan

Megan is back at the studio this fall for monthly sound baths, beginning September 18 @ 7pm.

As the season turns inward, this feels like a lovely way to begin. A chance to lie down, listen, breathe and let yourself be held by sound for a while.

The Living Tome

A Legacy Book Project · Begins October 2

What if you had a place to gather the pieces of a life you don’t want to lose?

The recipes that only live in someone’s head. Stories you’ve heard a hundred times. Family sayings, photographs, bits of wisdom, things you’ve learned along the way. The ordinary details that somehow become the things we remember most.

The Living Tome is a monthly gathering to slowly create a handmade book—a place to collect these pieces, reflect on where we’ve come from, and consider what we might want to carry forward.

You don’t need to know what your book will become. We’ll discover that together, making alongside one another and letting the pages take shape over time.

We begin October 2, and registration closes September 25.

I’m putting the finishing touches on the project now, so if you’ve been feeling that little I want to make this spark, this is the time to join.

*I’ve heard from several of you that Friday evenings aren’t ideal. If there’s enough interest, I’m open to shifting the group or creating a second daytime weekend group—so if the project calls to you but the timing doesn’t work, please let me know.

And a little something for winter…

I keep coming back to this idea of places to return to—and I’ve been wondering what that might look like at the studio through the darker months.

A warm place to make things, share ideas, learn from one another and gather in good company. Friends of the Studio is beginning to take shape.

I’ll share more next week in a separate email. If you’d like to be part of the conversation as it grows, email me and I’ll add you to the Friends of the Studio list.

Always a little something to carry with you...

As we move into autumn, you might notice yourself resisting the shift or rushing to catch it. Instead of asking, How do I get myself back into gear?
try asking:

What would help me land?

Maybe it’s an evening walk. Making something with your hands. Turning your phone off for an hour. Sitting with a cup of tea before everyone else wakes up.

Nothing big.

Just a small place to return to that feels connected and possible

Hope that helps,

Lora

I mentioned that an invitation to Friends of the Studio would be coming soon. Well, here it is. A quick note for those farther afield: this will be the only Friends of the Studio email sent to my full list. From here, dates and updates will only go to those who opt in. Why show up? Because it can be surprisingly hard to make time for the things we love. A million other things grab our attention, and the sketchbook stays closed, the mending sits in its basket, the journal goes untouched. I’ve...

I just got home from a week of kayaking in Desolation Sound. The first few days were exactly what I needed. Paddle. Eat. Swim. Sleep. Repeat. Somewhere around the fourth day, I noticed something shift. Until then, I'd been happily taking it all in—the changing colours of the water, weathered driftwood, seals surfacing beside the kayak, the rhythm of paddling. It made me wonder how much of everyday life keeps us in the role of observer. We spend so much time taking things in. Even beautiful...

Hello July! My hopes for your July are simple. Beautiful sunsets that make you pause. Kind words from unexpected places. Moments that feel almost curated just for you. Connections that leave you feeling seen and heard. Summer has a way of drawing us into our gardens, onto trails, around campfires, and back to the things that help us feel most like ourselves. I hope you find time for whatever lights you up—and perhaps make something along the way. That thought inspired a little summer...
